Welcome to the August issue of e:news from Health & Safety Matters.

There have been mixed reactions to a new report from BRE (Better Regulation Executive) which suggests that better support and advice on health and safety could save small businesses up to £300 million a year.

Proposals to provide a web-based and telephone support system for SMEs on Health and Safety issues were widely welcomed, but some elements of the report received less positive reactions. The TUC expressed disappointment with the labelling of health and safety regulation as 'a burden' to small businesses and UCATT said the idea that businesses should have their health and safety responsibilities reduced is dangerous.
