Welcome to the October issue of e:news from Health & Safety Matters.

You could have been excused for laughing this week if you read about Stoke City midfielder Liam Lawrence's ankle injury gained from falling over his dog Lawrence dogged by bizarre injury. Apart from this leading to an amusing reflection on the susceptibility of footballers to unusual accidents Footballing pratfalls and pitfalls it also reminds us of the wider issue of behavioural safety.

The idea that accidents can be caused by unsafe behaviour (eg. the decision to step over a dog) has been receiving increasing attention over recent years. While Stoke City fans may disagree, Lawrence's ankle injury is probably not widely considered to be a tragedy, but there is a school of thought that believes a behaviour modification (BMod) approach to safety could prevent several workplace accidents including serious tragedies. For those interested in this subject, IOSH's Nick Wharton takes a closer look in Engaging People with a Cultural and Behavioural Approach to Safety just one of the free seminars being held at Health and Safety 08 in Bolton next week on Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th October.
