The latest HSE figures (7th December 2011)

The latest 2010/11 figures from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) show that 171 workers were killed at work, up from 147 fatalities in the previous 12 months. While, an estimated 1.2 million people who worked during the last year were suffering from an illness that they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work, down from 1.3 million in 2009/10.

Better support for respiratory protection (15th August 2009)

Recent research indicates that of the people needing to use respiratory protection about half do not use RPE (respiratory protective equipment). This same research shows that of the half that do use RPE, only half of them are using it correctly, have been properly fit-tested and have been adequately trained in its use and maintenance.

There appears to be two interpretations of the term "competence" and while there is some movement to bring these definitions together, there is a significant gap when if comes to the differences between the legal interpretation in respect of health and safety regulations, the educational system of qualifications and the expectations of those seeking to employ/engage competent advice and guidance.
