From the Secretary’s desk June 1st 2008 With the holiday season fast approaching it is timely for us all to realise that duty holders and those responsible for the safety of others also take vacational leave. While they are away, work continues and it is important that the management of safety and health is not compromised as a result of their absence.
CMP is to be congratulated on its Safety and Health Expo. Initial reports suggest that visitor and exhibitor numbers increased again this year. In its position as a sponsor of this event, the BSIF will be seeking to assist the organisers in the show's development and support its expansion such that this exhibition becomes a "must be there" event for the whole safety industry.
The BSIF is to hold its annual Networking Day on 13th October at the Forest of Arden Hotel near to Birmingham. Encouraged by positive reactions to the inclusion of more networking time last year, the BSIF is designing the 2008 programme to maximise the facilities for members and guests to meet and discuss safety industry issues, whether through participation in leisure and sporting activities, at the pre-dinner wine-tasting, over dinner or in the bar afterwards. Please contact the BSIF Secretariat or BSIF Enterprises for your booking form.
The inclusion of the new Safety Excellence awards and the development of the Safety Service Awards alongside its traditional Product Innovation awards has expanded the BSIF's ability to recognise and celebrate innovation in the safety industry. The presentation ceremony at the Expo was well attended, standing room only, and some eighteen awards were presented this year. Our thanks go to our sponsors 3M for their support. Elsewhere in these BSIF pages are the latest situation on the current initiatives being pursued in conjunction with the HSE, the PPE Directive and the importance of selecting the correct sorbents to handle spills of hazardous liquids.
If you have any comments or wish to contribute to any of these activities, please contact the BSIF via the contact details listed or send a letter or email to the editor.
