PPE Harmonised Standards Re-published

The recent issue of the EU Official Journal features a section listing the current PPE harmonised standards. In the light of the "New Approach" blueprint it is the publication of these standards within the EU OJ, rather than their publication by CEN, which provides the presumption of conformity for any particular EN to the PPE Directive. As a result this publication will take on a far greater significance in the future.

Supporting British Exports

Some readers may be aware that the safety, fire and security sectors have recently combined with the defence sector to provide a more substantial support for exporting initiatives.

An international colloquium is being planned in early December this year and the BSIF is now generating other initiatives to support the export of British safety equipment from a much stronger position than has been the case for the last decade.

Accreditation of Safety Professionals

As many readers will know the BSIF has been a strong supporter of the idea that safety professionals should be the subject of self-regulation so that those using their services have a clear understanding that they are competent based on some form of independent audit against nationally accepted standards. The BSIF is keen to avoid the difficulties of a multitude of standards as used with the construction industry's ‘passport schemes’. It is also keen to assist smaller businesses engaging safety consultants, who ultimately take responsibility for their competence, by providing them with a suitable "yard-stick" on which to judge the recruitment of appropriate professional assistance.
