BSIF award winners 2009
June 1st 2009

Championing the importance of innovation and the highest standards of excellence when it comes to improving occupational health and safety in the UK the British Safety Industry Federation Awards 2009 were presented at this year's Safety & Health Expo last month

Describing this year's entries, David Lummis of the BSIF comments: "They have really demonstrated the exceptional manufacturing innovation and quality of service that is out there in the UK safety industry. The standard of entries for all three categories was really high this year. This made the judging a harder process, but it also means that the winners can relish in the fact that they are among the very best in an industry that is envied around the world." The winners in the three categories are as follows:

BSIF Product Innovation Award This Award is given to new innovative products that, in the opinion of the judging panel, will make a significant contribution to reductions in workplace injuries.

Overall Award Winner Metallica Cut Proof Glove - B M Polyco Metallica is a cut resistant glove which also delivers a high level of comfort and dexterity (see right). It was considered by the judges to be a unique alternative to chain mail products, performing just as well while being lighter, more dexterous and easier to use and wear.

Highly Commended Award Winners Cleankeys – Keytools Cleankeys is an easy to clean keyboard with a smooth glass surface. The keys are touch sensitive allowing them to be touched either directly or through gloves.

Necprotech – JSP Necprotech is an effective neck support system developed specifically for those who spend a lot of time looking up. It is said to significantly reduce the stress on the neck muscles and thereby helps prevent neck pain, strain and possible long term sickness and injury.

Commended Award Winners Reflex Safety Helmet – Centurion Safety Products Miller Edge-Tested Personal Fall Limited Sperian Protection Kleenguard H50 Multiple Use Earclips – Kimberly Clark Professional

BSIF Safety Service Award This is awarded to companies within the safety field that offer both exceptional and innovative service solutions. Entrants are required to provide the contact details of five customer companies who are sent a confidential questionnaire. By means of clearly defined topic areas, these customers are asked to rate the entrant for each category. Using the returns, an average score is calculated and the entry achieving the highest average score wins an Award.

Overall Award Winner Guardsman Highly Commended Award Winner Arco, Linlithgow Commended Award Winner Moldex UK

BSIF Safety Excellence Awards This award highlights activities which have improved the safety for employees of an organisation. It is based upon submitted case studies of existing and specific safety activities, supported by the company which has experienced the improvement.

Overall Award Winner Hearing Protection, Military Musicians Bunzl Greenham The entries for all the Awards were judged by an independent panel of industry experts. Fergal Morris of the diversified technology company, 3M, the sponsor of the awards, had the honour of presenting the awards to the winners. He commented: "The exceptional standard of this year's entries made the judging of the 2009 Awards difficult and demanding, and therefore incredibly rewarding. It is so good to know that the high standards of our safety industry show no sign of abating, however tough the environment.

From innovative product design to the level of service that is offered, the winners of this year's BSIF Safety Awards are examples of why the UK occupational health and safety industry is respected and praised around the world."
