Respiratory Protection Fit-testing - ask for evidence of competence November 1st 2009 The first scheme of its type, generated by a close cooperation between the HSE and the BSIF, now provides a simple route for fit-testers of respiratory protection to demonstrate competence as set out within HSG 53 [the HSE's guidance on respiratory protection].
To achieve accreditation, usually granted for a three year period, fit-testers will need to pass a knowledge test in the form of a written, multi-choice examination and will need to demonstrate their ability to carry out a fittest under the scrutiny of a qualified assessor.
Fit-testing is a vital element in providing adequate respiratory protection and HSG 53 makes it clear that this should be carried out by a competent person. A Fit2Fit accredited fit-tester will have demonstrated that competence. Employers seeking to use an employee to carry out this task is advised to arrange for them to be accredited. Employers who use external specialists to provide respiratory fittesting should ask to see evidence that that person is competent – such as a Fit2Fit accreditation certificate.
