Construction industry debate
November 1st 2009

Several representatives from the construction sector participated in a recent British Safety Council (BSC) conference on the health & safety challenges facing the industry.

Among others, the audience heard presentations from Rita Donaghy CBE, Chair of the Government Inquiry into Construction Fatalities. BSC member organisations including Rok and Kier Group spoke on safety culture and leadership and a case study on the benefits of ‘near miss’ reporting was presented by Enabling Works; one of the construction consortiums involved in 2012 Olympic Park.

Rita Donaghy, spoke about her recent report to Government, One Death is too Many and discussed the concern that unnecessary barriers such as bureaucracy involved in contract pre-qualification procedures being a bar to improvements in health and safety.

The BSC will host a Breakfast Briefing open to all, in London on 8th December, covering major health & safety issues of the day. For further info: visit www.britsafe.org/events.
