Handling takes off
May 1st 2009

The extreme length of product stored at CAV Aerospace's warehousing facility in Flintshire, North Wales, was proving too much for standard counterbalance forklifts to cope with, so the company opted for a specialist solution from Combilift.

CAV Aerospace supplies Airbus with stringers – aluminium elements for aircraft wings. As boxes of stringers can be over 20m long, this is a challenging load for any operation to handle. Distribution manager Gary Green explains: "We were having to execute some very tricky manoeuvres with the two old counterbalance forklifts, which was potentially hazardous as well as time-consuming and inefficient. We had seen Combilifts working at other Airbus plants around the country and realised that 4-way capability would be a crucial advantage for manoeuvering these loads."
