Safety on the up
October 1st 2005

Concorde Glass has halved the time taken to unload incoming containers since using a ramp supplied by Thorworld Industries.

Fitted with a dock leveller, it has transformed unloading into a one-man job and resulted in better working conditions.

The glass arrives at the Barking warehouse in containers carrying up to 22 one-tonne cases. A 40ft long loading ramp was previously used to unload them. Two forklifts were used: one to drive up the ramp to unload cases; the other to transport them inside the warehouse.

The new Thorworld ramp is 6m long by 2m wide and has a 6t capacity. In three sections, it has a 2m long counterbalanced ramp and a 2m long hinged dock leveller. It is bolted to the concrete surface inside the warehouse.

A 3t forklift goes up the ramp into the container to collect two cases of glass before reversing into the warehouse and placing them in stock.

fs Safety side curbs are fitted on both ramp and dock leveller. The drawbridge leveller is stored in the vertical position when not in use.
