DEVICE PROVES IT’S A REAL LIFE SAVER April 1st 2005 A HeartStart defibrillator from Laerdal and quick thinking staff at Crowtree Leisure Centre, Sunderland, helped to save the life of a 67 year old man.
Ted Reilly had collapsed at the leisure centre with a sudden cardiac arrest.
Marie Hutchinson, AED trained coronary heart disease nurse knew the centre had a HeadStart defibrillator and quickly summoned help.
One colleague started emergency ventilation (mouth to mouth), Marie administered chest compression, while another colleague, Alan Towers, called 999 and fetched the HeadStart defibrillator.
Pads were attached to Ted’s chest and Alan followed the audible and visual instructions on the defibrillator. The machine assessed the rhythm of Ted’s heart and advised a shock. Alan pressed the ‘shock’ button to send a controlled, safe shock through the pads to the patient’s heart which immediately regained a stable beat. All this took just 2 to 3min.
