The EU directives on noise labelling of many types of machinery, both domestic and industrial, are now implemented into UK law. These require products to carry a noise label that gives the sound power level. From this, the consumer can choose the product with the lower noise emission and the expert can calculate the actual sound pressure level that will be generated in any given acoustic climate. Methods for the determination of sound power are defined in a series of British Standards and these can be quite complex, requiring a number of measurements and detailed knowledge of the acoustic climate in which the measurements were made.

To simplify the procedure, Norsonic AS of Norway, manufacturer of sound level meters, has introduced a software package.

It implements the exact requirements of the standards and guides the user through the set up of the instrumentation, controls the measurement procedure and post processes the results to give the overall sound power level. Campbell Associates has further information.
