Flexible approach
April 1st 2007

3M has joined forces with EPL Composite Solutions in the development of a new type of 'passively safe' post that, it believes, signals a new era for the signing industry and a step forward in improving road safety.

The 3M Frangible Post System is said to be strong enough to withstand turbulent weather conditions, yet light and flexible enough to collapse on impact, protecting the driver and passengers and causing minimum damage to the vehicle.

The new, crash-friendly product is a 140mm diameter reinforced composite post designed to have the equivalent structural performance of a 114mm steel post, but with the ability to break easily upon the impact of a vehicle.

The system is simple to install, is compatible with existing, standard road signs, is durable for 25 years and is expected to have lower installed costs than some other passively safe products.
