Cutting the cost of stress June 1st 2008 Work-related stress is costing
employers worldwide millions
and, according to Michael
Bright, managing director of
IMSM, it's time for
organisations to meet their
existing duty of care to help
end the epidemic of stressrelated
illnesses.
Businesses can experience
significant hidden costs,
from impaired decisionmaking,
poor communications
and a tendency to be more
accident prone, as well as
the more obvious costs of
downtime through accidents,
litigation, and absenteeism.
An international standard
which can help businesses
show they have taken all
reasonable measures to
document and prevent
stress-related illnesses is the
revised BS OHSAS 18001
(Health and Safety). This
provides an organisation
with preventative measures
to protect employees from
the effects of stress, by
having a framework in which
to develop and implement
policies to manage both the
content and context of the
work. More articles from IMSM Ltd: |
