BACKING FOR BLACK
December 1st 2008

The Government has responded positively to Dame Carol Black’s review of the health of the working age population: Working for a Healthier Tomorrow. In their response – Improving health and work: changing lives, James Purnell and health secretary Alan Johnson supported a number of the reviews recommendations setting out measures to take them forward.

Replacing paper sick notes with an electronic ‘Fit note’ and providing more support for smaller businesses to help them take action on health, work and well-being issues are among the proposed solutions.

Additionally a National Centre for Working-age Health and Wellbeing is to be set up which will promote research into work-health issues and local wellbeing coordinators will provide organisations with specialist support.
