Corby case settles out-of-court
May 1st 2010 Corby Council has reached an out-of-court settlement over compensation for birth defects caused by toixc waste at a clean up operation of a former British Steel site.
Last year, the High Court ruled that the council’s negligence in cleaning up the waste affected pregnant women in the 1980s and 1990s who went on to have children with birth defects.The council initially disputed the claims but has now issued an apology and agreed to pay compensation to the 19 affected by the incident.
While the compensation figures remain undisclosed lawyers for the victim’s families had previously hoped each individual would receive £500,000 which would leave Corby with a bill of £95 million. More articles from HSM News Desk: |
