Health and Safety at Work Act turns 35 August 15th 2009 On the 31st July the Health and Safety at Work Act turned 35. The Act came about largely as result of the Robens Report on Safety and Health at Work published in 1972.
The Robens Report set out to reduce the number of work related fatalities while also addressing the abundance of health and safety law and its complicated nature; Prior to the HSWA there were approximately 30 Acts and over 500 regulations related to health and safety in the workplace.
Since the introduction of the HSWA, the number of workplace fatalities has fallen from 651 in 1974 to around 180 in 2009. More articles from HSM News Desk: |
