Naughty sat nav system
April 10th 2006

Visitors to the Yorkshire Dales are being sent up a dangerous track by their cars satellite navigation systems, reports the Telegraph.

Numerous visitors have been directed on to a steep unclassified road with a 100ft drop on one side, ignoring a no through road sign, and opening a five-bar gate to follow their gadgets' instructions. Farmers are having to rescue them with tractors as vehicles are getting stuck.

Steven Porter, a local farmer, was baffled by the increase in traffic - until one victim said he was just following directions given by his satellite navigation system. "They must have all got sat-navs for Christmas," he said.

He has now raised the issue with the local council, hoping to get a safety sign erected "before someone goes over the edge of that drop".
