Electricity industry safer than ever June 8th 2006 Targets to reduce accidents and days lost through injury have been met five years ahead of schedule according to the annual SAFELEC 2010 report published by the Energy Networks Association.
Set up in 2000 by electricity industry companies, trade unions and the HSE the SAFELEC 2010 project set specific targets (such as to reduce the number of working days lost through injury by 30%) to be met by 2010. It has achieved many of those targets by sharing information and good practices.
However, while results for 2005 have been good, it is no guarantee that results for this year will yield similar reductions. Peter McCormick, chair of ENA’s Health, Safety and Environment Committee, urges industry not to become complacent so that further improvements can be made up to the end of the programme and beyond.
