Alpha for better emergency services
March 7th 2006

MSA has launched the alpha series – a new line of emergency service operation advances. alpha SCBA focuses on increasing safety efficiency and incident capability while the alpha personal network features electronic personal monitoring and telemetric capabilities. The technology is available with both the MSA AirMaXX and BD 96 breathing apparatus systems.

Single line pneumatics use patented hose-in-hose technology to simplify the SCBA air management system so that typical features which usually require up to five separate hoses are reduced to a single line. The QuickFill fast cylinder refill adapter is now directly attached to the pressure reducer. In comparison to conventional pneumatics the weight has been reduced by up to 35%. According to MSA the technology also offers increased safety, greater durability, simplified maintenance and lower cost of ownership.

The alphaClick rapid cylinder exchange adapter will also be available soon. It fits onto any standard cylinder and completely eliminates the need for threading – making changeover at least ten times faster.

The modular alpha personal network provides a wide range of monitoring, alarm and telemetric capability. Based around a small wireless personal monitoring and signal device – the alphaSCOUT – it can cut the number of units needed by a brigade by up to 75%, because it is not connected to a specific SCBA when fully disengaged. Fully customisable, it receives SCBA air pressure data from a transmitter on the SCBA every two seconds and calculates the remaining service time.

MSA has also launched GALAXY, a fully automated test station for designed to test, calibrate and charge a broad range of portable gas detectors – performing all three functions without user intervention.
