IOSH & HSE target teens before they start work November 7th 2006 Teachers and employers this month previewed a new initiative that teaches young people about workplaces hazards – before it's too late.
In the last decade, 66 under 19s were killed and over 14,500 badly injured at work. The Workplace Hazard Awareness Course, developed by IOSH and the HSE, aims to address this and is available to download from December at: www.wiseup2work.co.uk.
IOSH president Neil Budworth said the statistics showed the training was much needed. "Many of these accidents happen in the first few weeks on the job, suggesting that not only are inductions inadequate, but that young people may not be prepared for work in the first place. The Workplace hazard awareness course aims to fill part of this gap."
As part of the initiative, students can also achieve a qualification offered by British Safety Council Awards, which has been accredited by Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).
