I’m backing Britain
October 2nd 2007

Remember the old Slogan, ‘I’m backing Britain’. It emphasised the strength of British products and the need to support UK industry. Recently the British Safety Industry Federation has launched a campaign to promote the same ideals, but emphasising the benefits of buying British (and European) safety products and services.

Safety is not one of those items you want to ‘take a chance on.’ Cheap safety items may not always perform at the levels you expect. Let’s face it, poor quality clothing may not wear well and suddenly a hole may appear, but it won’t kill you.

Poor quality safety products on the other hand, just might.

That’s why the BSIF is promoting the 4 key strengths of UK (& European) safety products and services.

1/ Quality, 2/ Reliability, 3/ Innovation, 4/ Service.

Obviously, with any safety product, quality, performance and reliability are essential, not just for safe working, but also in terms of long-term costs. What is the working life cost of the product (how long will it last, against how much did it cost?), what are the issuing and exchange time costs, what are the hidden costs such as stores space, reordering costs, very importantly, what is the cost of an accident? As with so many things in life, a cheap up front price tag often isn’t the long-term cost saving it seems.

How about the services you buy in? If you use services such as product testing or design assistance, is the service reliable, accurate and perhaps even defendable in a court of law? Does your supplier work with you to reduce incidents, ensure on time delivery and supply the best total value solution available?

For its part, the British Safety Industry Federation is keen to assist in developing the real benefits of British (& European) products and services. Over the last 5 years, the BSIF Innovation Awards have promoted and endorsed new products and services which show true technical advance and innovative thinking.

Many British companies lead the world in innovation, offering not just ‘me too’ but true advances. Cost improvements, safety improvements and world leading services. Are you ‘Backing Britain’?
