Don’t get less than you bargained for!
May 12th 2008

There are a growing number of incidents of non CE approved or ‘fake’ safety products being sold into the UK for occupational safety. It’s a dangerous practice which can lead to serious injury for the user and prosecution for the employer and supplier.

All Personal Protective Equipment must be CE marked to confirm it meets and exceeds the performance requirement laid down the relevant European CE standard. It is against the law to use any PPE which is not marked appropriately. As an employer or user, its your job to make sure you comply.

But what about fake products. How can you tell? Well there are a number of signs. Was it unusually cheap? It might not be the bargain you thought! Does it look and feel like others you have brought previously? Did it come from a reputable supplier?

It’s the old adage, a fake Rolex might get you locked up, a fake piece of PPE might kill you first.

How can the BSIF help? First, if you're not sure on the product, phone the manufacturer or supplier directly. Each piece of PPE should be supplied with user details. Their name and contact details should appear on this. No joy? Well phone BSIF directly, (01745 585600) we can advise you on the best course of action.

Rogue Personal Protective Equipment can be a killer. Its not worth the chance!
