Does your entrance matting break the law?
January 28th 2008

“It’s hard to enter a building without falling over” according to Ben Colbourne of fixed flooring specialist, Gripfit. “Falling over legislation to ensure safer and more accessible premises, that is. Yet many companies are still using loose mats or recessed coir matting for entrance areas, which breach a whole raft of laws, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and BS8300: 2001.

The first few feet are the biggest hazard area where wet, dirty, rucked-up or worn, unfixed and loose mats literally trip up the public leading to injury and claims”.

The company’s own Gripfit system offers an entrance matting solution that reduces slips and trips by up to 100%, by using dirt and moisture retentive matting within a fixed, low profile aluminium frame, giving end users and proprietors the same performance as conventional mats, without the risks.

Ben Colbourne continued “The advantage is that Gripfit matting is always in the correct place, it is not a trip hazard, it is owned, not rented, and as it comes with a maintenance contract, quite simply it always functions as designed.

Gripfit is currently in use by the NHS, retailers and supermarket groups in the UK and Europe but can be used in any entrance area, provide a safe, neat and attractive entry area. The system is available in variable sizes and colours, it can be adhered to any hard, flat surface to secure a moisture retentive mat in place and can be used in place of hazardous mat wells disrupting customers’ footfall.
