An illegal CE mark? January 22nd 2008 The BSIF is becoming increasingly concerned that a number of products are available in the UK market that do not live up to their CE approvals or are in fact not approved at all.
At a recent British Safety Industry Federation conference, members of the BSIF highlighted cases where it knew of products that were manufactured from differing materials to those originally submitted for test, or where the performance claims far exceeded the products capability.
The conference agreed that the threat of illegal CE products or copy products that were used for passing off as the originals, constituted a serious risk to occupational safety and they would act collectively to highlight and resolve this situation. Other bodies within the safety industry and Government have also expressed their concerns and have requested to be kept informed and where appropriate involved in any actions required.
The British Safety Industry Federation as the lead trade association for the safety industry, operate a strict code of practice for their members and have already expelled companies who have not lived up to these high standards. The next BSIF conference on this subject is scheduled for the end of January and at this, collective future action will be agreed.
