HSE calls for greater stakeholder involvement as it launches new strategy
December 3rd 2008

The HSE has called on industry stakeholders to play their part as it launches "Be part of the Solution" the consultation on its new strategy for the health and safety of Great Britain.

At the launch in London today, HSE chair Judith Hackitt urged this was not an HSE strategy but: "A strategy for health and safety in Great Britain."

"And everyone has a role to play," said Judith, suggesting that industry bodies and trade associations such as the BSIF are often better points of reference than the HSE because they can provide more specialist support.

The HSE's says its decision to launch a new strategy has been prompted by the recent plateau in Great Britain's health and safety performance as well as a changing industrial landscape and increase in small businesses.

Keen to avoid any criticism over recent dwindling numbers of HSE inspectors, Hackitt stressed that Investigation and securing justice remain a priority. The HSE is currently in the process of recruiting more inspectors: " to bring levels back up to where we believe they should be at," said Hackitt.

Goals set out in the strategy include:

• Encouraging strong leadership and championing a common sense approach to health and safety;

• Building competence of those charged with delivering health and safety in workplaces;

• Promoting the benefits of worker involvement, whether the workplace is unionised or not;
