BSIF Members given insight into new Health and Safety Strategy
February 11th 2009

On 14th January, the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) welcomed the Health & Safety Executive chair, Judith Hackitt, at the first BSIF Directors Club Luncheon of 2009.

In December 2008, the HSE announced the launch of its new strategy: The Health & Safety of Great Britain – Be Part of the Solution. It gave out a clear message that it wants employers and industry bodies to recognise their respective roles in reducing injury and ill health rates in the UK, and is meeting with major industry stakeholders during a three month consultation period. The results will then be incorporated into a final document later in the year.

This prestigious event was attended by key industry leaders, all of whom are BSIF members. Following Judith’s talk, they were given the opportunity to ask questions and input directly into the consultation process. Judith commented: “We should recognise and be proud of our health and safety record to prevent death, injury and ill health in Great Britain’s workplaces which is admired by other countries. However, engaging employers and employees to take a more active part in delivering best practice will ensure our health and safety performance regains momentum. By working together, we can find ways to engage workforces across all industries. “

Geoff Hooke, Secretary General of the BSIF, agreed. ”As the leading trade body within the safety industry we are very pleased with the HSE’s declared intention to have more interaction with trade bodies, unions and other interested parties. We recognise that by engaging workforces their understanding of the importance of best practice is enhanced which will re-motivate and en-energise the industry at an economic time when the temptation is to make cut backs. As such we are enthusiastic about being part of the process.”
