Avoiding workplace dermatitis
March 9th 2009

Dermatitis contracted through the workplace continues to be of serious concern. While the short term effects can be irritating and uncomfortable, the long term ones can be devastating and very painful.

To help educate owners/managers and their employees, BSIF members are supporting a series of Skin Care seminars, specifically focused upon food production, preparation and retail industries, where dermatitis remains a very real problem.

A recent spotlight upon the hair care industry (hairdressers in particular) showed what can be achieved with better education and improved awareness. The attitude that it was “a risk hairdressers should accept” and “it’s part of being a hairdresser” was slowly being dispelled. Sensible skin care regimes, including appropriate skin care creams and sensible glove usage, were major themes and hairdressers were shown dermatitis could easily be avoided if appropriate actions were taken.

The food trade has similar issues but there is no need for workers to suffer. Simple but effective solutions are available at little cost and with excellent results. Look out for the seminars in your area.
