'Water' way to improve safety
June 3rd 2010

A bus company in China has has been hanging bowls of water next to its drivers as part of a new 'drive safely' campaign

The Longxiang Public Bus Company in Changsha, Hunan province, says the bowls have been introduced to make drivers drive gently to avoid spilling any water, according to reports in the Xiaoxiang Morning Post.

The bus drivers are expected to ensure the bowls are still full when they finish their shift.

"Passengers often complain that sudden braking and bad driving makes them really uncomfortable on the buses," explained a company spokesman.

"Hanging bowls of water in the driver's cab will discourage them from making any jolting starts, sudden braking or bad turns."

CCTV monitoring will be used to make sure the drivers do not top up the bowls with water.
