Mask and specs combo simplifies fit testing
June 7th 2010 A new concept in eye and respiratory protection has been developed by JSP to solve the problem of incompatible safety eyewear and disposable masks, which has made respirator fit testing a challenge for almost a decade. Called FilterSpec, the unit combines a mask and disposable filter with safety spectacles or goggles into one unit in a way that allows both protective devices to work independently, but in harmony.
Fit testing of tight fitting respiratory protection is mandated in HSE information document 282/28, and should be conducted with workers wearing their usual PPE; when different eye and respiratory PPE are later used the fit test results become irrelevant. Combining eye and respiratory protection into one unit avoids this, and overcomes the problem of leaky masks and fogged lenses that often occur when one item of PPE compromises another. FilterSpec and a goggle version called FilterSpec Pro, allows both eye and respiratory protection to work as an integrated unit, so that a perfect fit is achieved for both items of PPE.
The lens is anti-mist and anti-scratch coated as standard, and the mask holder and filter weigh less than 60g, including an integral exhaust valve. A nose piece holds the valve in line with the wearer’s nose and keeps the internal environment cooler and drier, and the lens free of fogging.
