IMMEDIATE TEST OF SWITCHGEAR SAFETY
February 1st 2005

EA Technology has launched an upgraded version of its UltraTEV unit that is said to be the world’s first handheld unit to give instant indication of both surface and internal discharges in switchgear. It uses a combination of ultrasonic and transient earth voltage (TEV) detection.

The company’s Colin Vickers says “The UltraTEV is the first handheld unit to provide an immediate test of whether switchgear is safe to approach. We would like to see it issued as standard safety equipment for all personnel working around switchgear, in addition to its role as a diagnostic tool for detecting early signs of equipment failure.” UltraTEV has two indicator lights for ultrasonic activity and TEV activity. A red light means needs urgent investigation.
