CRANES GIVE LIFT TO NEW AIRBUS
October 1st 2004

Demag Cranes and Components has made and installed lifting equipment for Airbus Deutschland in Germany where fuselage sections are made for the Airbus A380. Assembly involves turning sections from vertical to horizontal position and back again, moving simultaneously in five directions.

It also involves the safe deposit and pick-up of the sections. Each one is up to 10.8m long, 6.7m wide and 2.3m high and weighs up to 1.6t, so it is necessary to suspend them from four points for lifting and moving.

The system developed comprises three overhead double girder cranes with spans of 32, 37 and 39m.

To allow cranes to coordinate the required five parallel directions of load movement, Demag fitted them with rotating crab units. Two traversing crabs travel on the rotating H frame that spans 7m. Two travelling hoists support the load at four points and operate beneath each of the 11m load beams.

Frequency inverters allow positioning accuracy.
