Light curtain inspections
April 1st 2008

Companies using light curtains to safeguard machinery often do not appreciate the implications of the regulatory requirement for inspections, according to Steward Robinson of Pilz Automation Technology.

Electrosensitive protective equipment certification involves an inspection to ensure that the light curtain cannot be defeated and that it is correctly positioned in relation to mechanical hazards. Active Optoelectronic Protective Device certification is the same as ESPE certification.

Information about ESPE assessments are contained in IEC 62046.

Pilz has Notified Body status for carrying out such assessments.
