Simple tofitadd-on gearbox
May 1st 2009

Dutch valve safety specialist Netherlocks B.V has designed a direct-mounting, add-on gearbox to reduce torque for handwheel operated valves. The Nethergear unit can be fitted on-site without taking the valve offline.

Most standard hand-operated gate or globe valves have no flange upon which to mount a gearbox. The stainless steel AISI 316 Nethergear unit mounts directly on to the valve stem without altering the actual valve itself.

The adaptor is based on the company's interlock design. Once attached, the handwheel can be simply fitted on to the unit in one of two positions. One of these will provide the torque reduction benefits of the gear mechanism; the Saint Gobain Glass UK has a fire suppression system from Nobel Fire Systems at its float glass manufacturing plant near Selby, The SpectrAlarm family from E2S offers high performance audible and visual signalling in a single unit.

Sound outputs of up to 126dB can be combined with a powerful beacon with a choice of rotating mirror, flashing Xenon or LED technologies.

According to E2S, until now most products available were limited to a 5 Joule Xenon beacon, which is not powerful enough for outdoor use, especially in bright sunlight. The AB121, with its choice of 15 Joule Xenon or rotating mirror beacons, provides effective signalling in all conditions.

The integral design is not only more aesthetically pleasing than separate units, it also saves on installation time, reducing cost. The sounder and beacon can be connected separately, allowing the user to silence the alarm but leave the beacon flashing until the emergency or fault has been cleared.

other lets it function as it would have originally.

A Netherlocks pneumatic drive unit can also be attached for automatic valve operation that can be up to 25 times faster than doing it by hand.
