Off-the-peg and fit-for-purpose
August 1st 2007

Cosalt:Ballyclare provides specialised garments that are designed to ensure fire fighters' clothing is fit-forpurpose.

The company says that, as fire and rescue work becomes increasingly complex, there is a growing realisation that 'standard' kit does not suit all purposes.

An example of this is the High Volume Pump suit. PPE requirements for the operation of high volume pump vehicles are widely different from regular fire fighting requirements. The vehicle will never be near the fire, so what is required is not flame retardancy, but total waterproofing and maximum comfort.

Cosalt:Ballyclare is working with fire services and fabric manufacturers to develop an HVP suit to match requirements, taking into account such factors as ergonomic cut and positioning of fabric reenforcements and pockets.

Other specialised garments include the Wildland coverall, the Line Rescue suit and the Technical Rescue suit.
