First aid for eyes
February 1st 2007

Fast, effective primary first aid is crucial to limit the damage to eye and body injuries caused by accidents involving corrosive substances such as acids and alkalis.

Chemicals can reach the eye or body in solid, liquid or gas form. A few drops of acids or alkali can lead to irreparable damage to the eyes. Caustic burning can occur very quickly, so it is imperative that fast, effective action is taken to neutralise the offending chemical to a harmless level and restore the pH balance in the eye to its normal level of 7.4. This initial first aid application can help save eyesight and serious burns to the skin.

New pH Neutral, available from Kingfisher, is a sterile 4.9% phosphate solution based on salts that are found naturally in the body. The salt content is 2.5 times the normal concentration found in the eye and Kingfisher says studies show this level is very effective in initial treatment without risking further damage.

The 200mL pH Neutral has an ergonomic eyebath for safe application and is a handy bottle suitable for the first aid kit, vehicle or tool box. A belt bag is also offered.

The product is also available in 1L emergency shower bottles as a mobile unit or a wall mounted station with pictogram.

Independent of water installations, the application is equivalent to treatment by 50L of tap water.

pH Neutral gives a minimum of 2min rinse time and has a 3-year shelf life.
