All-round approach to hand protection
August 1st 2007

With 145 members of staff, 110 of whom are working on a daily basis with potentially hazardous chemicals and inks, Acorn Web Offset recognised the need to bring in specialist support to ensure its hand protection needs were fully met.

Karl Gater, operations manager, says "Through the risk assessments we carried out as part of our ISO 18001 standard, we recognised that we could further improve the level of chemical, physical and thermal hand protection provided on site, even though we had never had a problem in this area.

"Having discussed our requirements with Marigold Industrial, they came up with a complete hand protection programme rather than just a range of of these boxes and see the visual evidence of what parts of their hands haven't been cleaned. Most infections are transmitted on the hands, so anything which helps to reinforce proper hand hygiene is really important.

Davies continues "Other methods of infection control, like gloves, changing aprons and specialist ventilation systems all help, but hand hygiene is absolutely pivotal." Deb donated the Glo-Germ boxes to the Trust to help launch the Hand Hygiene Trainers project.

SKC says that in most cases low skin moisture level is evidence that the skin has been damaged by contact with irritants or by poor skin care standards.

Not only were we given a range of gloves and sleeves that were specific to the tasks being carried out on site and the hazards encountered, but the products were supplemented with a range of training and educational materials including posters."
