Helmet comes out on top
August 15th 2008

The winner of this year's BSIF Product Innovation Award, the Peltor Solaris submitted by Aearo (now part of 3M) enables the wearer to see when a helmet is unusable due to UV exposure.

The plastic material in hardhats used outdoors is gradually degraded by untraviolet radiation, until eventually its protective capacity is compromised.

To address this problem, an indicator unit built into the helmet starts as a bright red colour. With the passage of time and the helmet's exposure to sunlight, the indicator gradually fades and, when it has turned white it's time to change the helmet.
