A measure of condition
August 1st 2007

Available from SKC, the Dermal Measurement Unit EDS12 allows the user to simply and quickly obtain quantitative data on skin condition by measuring the moisture level of the top skin layer using a noninvasive probe.

SKC says that in most cases low skin moisture level is evidence that the skin has been damaged by contact with irritants or by poor skin care standards.

An optional TEWL probe measures the transepidermal water loss, which is the moisture that passes through the skin and evaporates from the surface.

If the barrier of the skin is in poor condition, it is more susceptible to damage from harmful substances.

The optional Erytherma (redness) probe is a useful tool to quantify rashes as it measures the underlying skin redness.

Data from the EDS 12 can be used, for example, to monitor the workforce, enabling action to be taken before any visible indication of skin damage appears. It can also help identify workplace areas where there is a high risk of damage to health from skin exposure.
