Hand hygiene
May 1st 2009

The flu virus is spread when an infected person sneezes or coughs and contaminated droplets travel through the air. By breathing in these droplets, or letting them come in contact with eyes, a person can become infected.

Hands are the main vehicle for transmitting germs from one person to another, either directly or by touching shared objects and surfaces.

Infection control expert, Deb, considers good hand hygiene to be the single most effective means of preventing the spread of infection.

The company advises that businesses can reduce the risk of staff catching and spreading flu by not only providing adequate hand washing facilities but also promoting the use of a hand sanitiser; applied regularly to clean, dry hands to complement routine hand washing.

Studies have shown that good hand hygiene practices can reduce shortterm sickness absence and associated costs by up to 50%.
