Hand hygiene May 1st 2009 The flu virus is spread when an
infected person sneezes or coughs and
contaminated droplets travel through
the air. By breathing in these droplets,
or letting them come in contact with
eyes, a person can become infected.
Hands are the main vehicle for
transmitting germs from one person
to another, either directly or by
touching shared objects and surfaces.
Infection control expert, Deb,
considers good hand hygiene to be
the single most effective means of
preventing the spread of infection.
The company advises that businesses
can reduce the risk of staff catching
and spreading flu by not only
providing adequate hand washing
facilities but also promoting the use
of a hand sanitiser; applied regularly
to clean, dry hands to complement
routine hand washing.
Studies have shown that good hand
hygiene practices can reduce shortterm
sickness absence and associated
