Prevents drive-away
February 1st 2007

Birds Eye relies on Castell's Salvo to protect warehouse operatives at its Hull factory from the risk of unscheduled trailer departure.

Having recognised that its system of traffic lights and manual powering up of loading bays by drivers failed to physically prevent a driver from leaving a bay prematurely, Birds Eye approached Castell for a safer alternative.

Now, having reversed a trailer to a loading bay, a driver collects a Salvo Susie lock from a cabinet next to the bay door and fits it to the emergency airline coupling. This action releases a key from the unit, which the driver inserts into an electrical switch next to the cabinet.

By turning the key, the driver powers the bay, changes the external traffic lights to red and sends the internal lights to green.

Mick Cahill, safety and environmental manager, says "Salvo's not made a jot of difference to staff, except that it's much safer and now provides a physical block to drive-aways."
