Be clean, seen, safe
August 1st 2005

High visibility clothing is a key factor in employee safety. Regulation 7 of The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 states ‘Every employer shall ensure that any PPE provided to employees is maintained (including replaced or cleaned as appropriate) in an efficient state, in an efficient working order and in good repair.

However, the reality of daily wear, means that garments soon become dirty – lowering their safety properties.

There is however, an option available that ensures employers are both compliant with Reg 7 and cut down on the regularity of costly replacements: PHS HiViz offer a specialist high visibility maintenance service – this uses a laundering process to remove oil, dirt and grime while protecting the garments inherent safety features (as the process does not bleach colour or damage tape reflectively).

The complete maintenance service includes bar coding for track and trace purposes, garment inspections, repairs, alterations and ‘condemned notifications’, i.e. if a garment is inspected and found to be damaged beyond repair, it is sent back to the wearer informing them that it is no longer fit for purpose.
