Sensible safety key to better business December 1st 2008 As part of its
ongoing campaign
to raise the
political debate
on issues of
sensible health and safety
and corporate responsibility,
the British Safety Council
has sponsored its inaugural
e-Politix Symposium.
In his opening statement
before an audience of
parliamentarians and
representatives from
business and professional
bodies, Brian Nimick, Chief
Executive of the British
Safety Council, said that
improvements in health and
safety systems could save
the economy billions of
pounds. Work-related injury
and ill-health imposes a
huge burden not only on
those injured or made ill but
also on society. It is
estimated that the financial
burden on society as a
whole, resulting from
reduced earnings and costs
to the NHS, amounts to
some £31bn each year
"The challenge to
eradicate ill-health and
injury in the workplace is as
important in today's
economic climate as it has
ever been" said Nimick.
"Today's business leaders
have a vital role to play in
developing a positive health
and safety culture in order
to reduce risks that cause
real harm to people and
disruption to their business"
Nimick emphasised the
role that 'sensible business'
has to play in preventing
health and safety issues
from being downgraded:
"We've got to rescue the
moral high-ground because
health and safety is too
important to allow the
media to have a free run.
Responsible business is
economically, socially and
ethically the sensible
approach to adopt". More articles from British Safety Council: |
