Folding safety system
February 1st 2006

Installing free-standing guard-rails is an economic approach to the prevention of falls from roofs, but the downside, for some buildings, is the impact on appearance.

To overcome the problem, Dunn & Cowe has introduced Fold-Shield, a guard-rail with a one-way hinge, locking bolt and sleeve mechanism that can be folded out-of-sight when not in use.

The product does not spoil the line of the building and can be used where planning regulations prohibit the use of a permanently erected guardrail.

A recent application was as a non-intrusive rooftop safety solution for a new PFI sports hall and changing block at James Brindley High School in Stoke-on- Trent.

Installation of Fold-Shield by Highwire, protects Balfour Beatty staff carrying out maintenance work on the building.

Dunn & Cowe's literature pack has further details on the product, together with information on Top-Shield, its fixed guard-rail system that is designed for direct attachment to profile metal sheet roofing (with a pitch of up to 10°).
