British Safety Council launches its own IOSH Managing Safely e-learning course
October 1st 2011

The British Safety Council has expanded its extensive portfolio of health and safety e-learning courses by launching an e-learning version of the well-established face-toface IOSH Managing Safely course.

Aimed at managers and supervisors in all organisations across all sectors, this nationally recognised course provides delegates with sufficient knowledge to manage practical health, safety and environmental issues in the workplace.

Quality-controlled by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), this highly respected course provides peace of mind that managers and supervisors are receiving high quality health and safety training, covering the key hazards and risks found in the typical workplace.

Specifically, IOSH Managing Safely includes an introduction to health and safety management; the identification of hazards; assessing and controlling risks; understanding managers' and supervisors' safety responsibilities; investigating accidents and incidents; measuring safety performance; and protecting the environment. Delegates study using a combination of online interactive content and downloadable PDFs for easy reference and revision, and learner support is also available via telephone and email.

Upon completion of the course, delegates sit an online multiple-choice assessment at a time of their choosing and carry out a practical assessment at work.

This involves completing a hazard spotting/risk assessment document in their organisation. Delegates who successfully complete the course and the practical and written assessments are awarded a certificate from IOSH.

Crucially, the course focuses on health and safety best practice rather than legislation, making it suitable for both UK-based candidates and those from other countries. And while an existing awareness of health and safety issues is an advantage, it is not essential.

The IOSH Managing Safely e-learning course is the latest addition to the British Safety Council's growing portfolio of health, safety and environmental elearning programmes. The courses provide basic web-based training for employees on issues such as the correct use of display screen equipment, fire safety, environmental awareness, manual handling and stress management.

Alex Botha, British Safety Council chief executive, said: "The new course allows managers and supervisors to learn about the health and safety issues they are responsible for at their own pace and convenience, without the need to take time out to attend formal classroom sessions. E-learning is a highly flexible and cost effective way of delivering health and safety training, allowing groups of employees to receive training quickly and effectively regardless of their location.

"The course is flexible and can be completed in just 24 hours – all that is required is a computer and an internet connection."
